The situation

A UK fintech app was spending £50K/month across Meta, Google, and LinkedIn. Their audience — privacy-conscious professionals in financial services — was unusually high on ad blocker usage. A technical audit revealed 42% of website visitors had browser-based blockers installed. All tracking was client-side. Nearly half their conversion data simply did not exist.

The problem

Browser-based tracking — every pixel, every GTM tag, every GA4 event — can be blocked by uBlock Origin, AdBlock Plus, and every major privacy extension. When a visitor's browser blocks these scripts, events do not fire. No pageview, no click, no conversion — nothing reaches any ad platform. Smart Bidding on Meta and Google was building its audience models on 58% of actual customer behavior — a skewed sample that systematically underrepresented the privacy-aware segment of their highest-quality buyers.

What we did

  1. Server-side log analysis compared backend app sessions against GA4 sessions — confirmed the 42% tracking gap
  2. Deployed a GTM Server-Side container on a first-party subdomain (analytics.brand.com) — events sent to a first-party endpoint are not blocked because browsers treat them as first-party requests
  3. Migrated all Meta, Google, and LinkedIn conversion events from client-side to server-side — browser events remain as backup, server is primary source
  4. Configured cross-platform deduplication so browser and server events for the same action are never double-counted
  5. Built a permanent monitoring dashboard comparing server-recorded conversions against platform-attributed conversions weekly

Why it worked

Server-side tracking sends data from your server to the platform's server — it never touches the user's browser, so ad blockers have no mechanism to intercept it. For finance, tech, and professional service audiences, 35–50% ad blocker rates are common. The fix gives Smart Bidding access to signals from your highest-quality buyers who were previously completely invisible.
