WooCommerce tracking can be implemented via plugins, direct GTM setup, or a combination of both. The plugin landscape is crowded with options promising “easy” tracking setup. Some deliver; others create problems that are hard to diagnose. Here is an honest assessment of the main options.

GTM4WP (Google Tag Manager for WordPress)

What it does: installs Google Tag Manager and provides a full WooCommerce ecommerce dataLayer. Free.

What it does NOT do: GTM4WP itself does not set up any tracking. It only provides the container and the dataLayer. You still need to configure tags inside GTM for GA4, Google Ads, Meta Pixel, etc.

Best for: stores that want full control over their tracking implementation and have someone who can configure GTM. This is the most flexible approach and the one we recommend for stores with any meaningful ad spend.

Limitations: requires GTM knowledge to set up tags correctly. Does not handle server-side events or Conversions API natively.

PixelYourSite Pro

What it does: multi-platform tracking plugin supporting Meta Pixel, GA4, Google Ads, and TikTok Pixel in one interface. Also includes Meta Conversions API integration in the Pro version. Paid (~$89–259/year depending on tier).

Best for: stores running multiple ad platforms that want a simpler setup than GTM without giving up multi-platform capability. Good balance of simplicity and capability.

Limitations: CAPI implementation is limited compared to a custom server-side setup. Some advanced ecommerce events require careful configuration.

MonsterInsights

What it does: GA4 and Google Analytics tracking for WordPress/WooCommerce with a user-friendly interface. The Pro version includes ecommerce tracking (add to cart, purchase, revenue). Paid ($99.50–399.50/year).

Best for: stores primarily focused on GA4 analytics that want easy setup with clean reporting inside the WordPress dashboard. Good for non-technical users who want GA4 ecommerce data without configuring GTM.

Limitations: primarily GA4-focused. Does not include Meta Pixel or ad platform tracking. Not a good choice if you need multi-platform ad tracking.

Facebook for WooCommerce (Official Meta Plugin)

What it does: installs Meta Pixel, tracks standard events, syncs WooCommerce product catalog to Meta for Dynamic Ads. Free.

Best for: stores primarily advertising on Meta that want the simplest possible pixel installation with catalog sync.

Limitations: Meta-only. Limited customisation. Plugin updates can sometimes break event tracking. Does not support CAPI in all versions — verify the current plugin version includes CAPI support.

Elevar

What it does: comprehensive multi-platform tracking solution designed for ecommerce stores. Handles GA4, Google Ads, Meta CAPI, TikTok, Pinterest, and more. Has server-side components. Paid ($50–500+/month depending on store size).

Best for: high-spend WooCommerce stores that want enterprise-grade tracking with server-side CAPI without building their own GTM infrastructure. Strong WooCommerce support.

Limitations: significant monthly cost. Overkill for small stores. Monthly pricing can exceed the cost of a custom GTM+CAPI setup over 12 months.

Our Recommendation

Small WooCommerce store (single platform): Facebook for WooCommerce (Meta only) or GTM4WP + manual GA4 setup.

Medium WooCommerce store (2-3 platforms, moderate ad spend): GTM4WP + PixelYourSite Pro. Best value combination of flexibility and ease.

Larger WooCommerce store ($10k+/month ad spend, multiple platforms): GTM4WP + custom GTM tags + manual CAPI integrations. Or Elevar if you prefer managed solution.

What No Plugin Replaces

Regardless of which plugin you use, you should always verify your tracking is actually working correctly — not just that the plugin is installed. A plugin that appears to be tracking can still be sending wrong data or missing events. Regular verification with GTM Preview mode, Meta Pixel Helper, and GA4 DebugView is essential.
