Google Ads Customer Match allows you to upload a list of your existing customers’ hashed contact information (email addresses, phone numbers, mailing addresses) and use it to reach those specific people across Google’s network — Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, and Discover. For Shopify store owners, Customer Match is one of the most powerful targeting tools in Google Ads because it lets you build campaigns around your actual customer data rather than relying on Google’s interest-based segments.
What Customer Match Can Do
- Target past customers: show ads to existing customers to encourage repeat purchases or cross-sells
- Suppress converted customers: exclude past buyers from acquisition campaigns to avoid wasting ad spend on people who already bought
- Adjust bids by customer value: increase bids for your best customers (high LTV segment) while decreasing for lower-value segments
- Similar audiences: Google can build “Similar Segments” from your Customer Match list to find new users who behave like your existing customers
Customer Match Eligibility Requirements
Google Ads Customer Match is available to accounts that meet these requirements:
- Your account must be in good standing (no policy violations)
- Your account must have a history of policy compliance
- Your account must have sufficient spend history (Google does not publish exact thresholds)
If Customer Match is not available in your Google Ads account, you will see a notice in Audience Manager indicating your account does not yet qualify.
How to Upload Your Shopify Customer List
Step 1: Export your customer list from Shopify
In Shopify Admin, go to Customers → Export. Select “All customers” and CSV format. Shopify exports a CSV with customer email, name, phone, and purchase data.
Step 2: Prepare the CSV for Google Ads
Google Ads requires a specific CSV format. The file should have one column per data type. Google will hash (SHA256) the data automatically after upload. Supported columns:
- First Name
- Last Name
- Country
- Zip/Postal Code
- Phone
Remove any extra columns from the Shopify export. Save as CSV.
Step 3: Upload to Google Ads Audience Manager
In Google Ads, go to Tools → Audience Manager → Your Data Segments → + → Customer List. Give the list a name (e.g. “Shopify All Customers”). Upload your CSV file. Set the membership duration (how long a contact stays in the list before expiring — 540 days max for Customer Match). Google will process the file and show the match rate within a few hours.
Understanding Customer Match Match Rates
Google will match your uploaded emails to Google account holders. A typical match rate is 40–60% for consumer ecommerce stores. If your customers use Gmail or other Google services with the same email address they used at checkout, the match rate is higher. If your customers use non-Google email providers or have multiple email addresses, the match rate is lower.
The matched audience must have at least 1,000 matched users before Google will serve ads to it. If your exported list is small, the matched audience may be too small for targeting.
Campaign Uses for Customer Match
Repeat Purchase Campaign (Search)
Create a Search campaign targeting only users in your Customer Match list. Use keywords related to your product category plus “reorder,” “more,” “refill” to capture past buyers actively searching to repurchase. This converts at a significantly higher rate than standard prospecting Search campaigns.
Suppress Past Buyers from Prospecting
In your prospecting campaigns, add your All Customers list as an exclusion. This prevents you from serving prospecting ads to people who already bought. You save budget and improve your reported customer acquisition numbers (not counting repeat purchases as “new customer acquisitions”).
High-Value Customer Bidding
Create a Customer Match list of your top 10% customers by lifetime value. In your campaigns, add this list as an audience observation target and set a bid adjustment of +50–100% for this segment. When these users are searching, you compete more aggressively to appear.
Keep Your Customer Match Lists Updated
Customer Match lists are static snapshots unless you update them. Set a monthly reminder to re-export from Shopify and re-upload to Google Ads. This adds new customers and keeps the list current.
