Google Ads video campaigns (YouTube) and Display campaigns measure conversions differently from Search campaigns. While Search relies entirely on clicks, Video and Display also measure view-through conversions — users who saw your ad without clicking and later converted. Understanding how video and display conversion tracking works is essential for evaluating whether these campaign types are actually contributing to your business results.

How Video Campaign Conversion Tracking Works

For YouTube video ads, a “view” is counted when a user watches at least 30 seconds of your ad (or the entire ad if shorter than 30 seconds), or interacts with the ad (clicks a companion banner, link overlay, etc.).

Two types of conversions apply to video campaigns:

Engaged View-Through Conversions (EVTCs)

When a user watches at least 10 seconds of a skippable video ad and later converts within the conversion window (default: 3 days for Video Action campaigns). This is a stronger signal than standard view-through because it requires substantive engagement with the ad content.

View-Through Conversions (VTCs)

When a user sees any portion of a video ad impression (including just viewing the video thumbnail in feed formats) and converts within the view-through window (default: 1 day). This is a weaker signal — a 1-second ad exposure that leads to a conversion within 24 hours may or may not have influenced the purchase.

How to Set Up Google Ads Video Conversion Tracking

Video campaign conversion tracking uses the same conversion actions as your Search and Shopping campaigns. No separate setup is required for video — if you have a purchase conversion action set up in Google Ads, it automatically applies to video campaigns as well.

However, configure these video-specific settings:

View-through conversion window

Go to Tools → Conversions → select your purchase conversion → Attribution. Set the view-through conversion window. The default is 1 day. For video campaigns that aim for brand awareness (where the user may not convert until several days later), you might extend this to 3–7 days. For direct response video campaigns, 1 day is appropriate.

Engaged view conversion window

For Video Action campaigns (the campaign type designed for direct response on YouTube), Google provides an Engaged View Conversion setting. Set this at the campaign level or conversion action level depending on your Google Ads account version.

Measuring True Video Campaign Performance

Because view-through conversions inflate video campaign attribution, use these methods for a more realistic assessment:

Brand Lift Studies

Google Ads offers Brand Lift measurement for qualifying video budgets. It uses a holdout methodology to measure the difference in brand awareness, consideration, or recall between users who saw your ad and those who did not. This is a more accurate measure of video ad effectiveness than view-through conversions.

Search Lift

Measure whether branded search volume increases during video campaign flights compared to baseline. If you are running YouTube video ads and branded Google searches increase, it suggests video is driving awareness that converts through search.

Incrementality Tests

Pause YouTube campaigns in a specific geographic region for a test period and compare performance vs a control region. If performance does not decline in the test region, the YouTube campaigns may not be generating incremental conversions.

GA4 Last-Click for Cross-Channel Comparison

In GA4, video campaign traffic can be attributed via UTM parameters (utm_source=youtube, utm_medium=cpc). GA4 last-click attribution shows you how often YouTube was the final touchpoint before purchase — a much stricter standard than view-through attribution. Compare GA4 last-click YouTube revenue to Google Ads reported YouTube revenue to understand the gap.
