Shopify Audiences is a feature available to Shopify Plus and eligible Shopify Advanced merchants that creates custom ad audiences based on purchase intent signals from across the Shopify network. It is different from standard pixel-based retargeting — instead of targeting people who visited your specific store, it identifies people across all Shopify stores who show high purchase intent for products like yours.
How Shopify Audiences Works
Shopify aggregates anonymised purchase signal data from across its merchant network. When merchants opt in to Shopify Audiences, they contribute their purchase data (in hashed, privacy-safe format) to a shared pool. Shopify then uses machine learning to identify patterns that predict purchase intent.
You use this to create Meta ad audiences of people who, based on their purchase behaviour across the Shopify network, are statistically likely to buy products in your category. These audiences are then exported directly to your Meta Ads account.
Shopify Audiences vs Standard Meta Lookalike Audiences
The key difference is the data source:
- Standard Lookalike Audience: built from your own pixel events or customer list. Limited to what your store’s pixel has seen. Typically requires at least 1,000 seed customers for a good lookalike.
- Shopify Audience: built from purchase signal data across the entire Shopify ecosystem. Does not require your store to have a large customer base. Effective even for newer stores with limited purchase history.
In practice, Shopify Audiences often outperform standard lookalikes for new or smaller stores because they have access to a much larger and more purchase-intent-specific signal pool.
Which Shopify Plans Have Access to Shopify Audiences
Shopify Audiences is available on:
- Shopify Plus
- Shopify Advanced (with some limitations)
It is not available on Basic Shopify or standard Shopify plans. If you are on a lower plan and interested in this feature, it is one reason to consider upgrading if you are spending significantly on Meta ads.
How to Set Up Shopify Audiences
- Go to Shopify Admin → Marketing → Audiences
- Connect your Meta Ads account
- Create a new audience by selecting your product category and target country
- Shopify generates the audience and exports it directly to Meta Ads Manager as a Custom Audience
- Use the audience in a new Meta campaign as you would any other Custom Audience
Audience creation typically takes 24–48 hours. Once available in Meta Ads Manager, you can use it as a targeting audience or as the seed for a Lookalike Audience.
Best Practices for Using Shopify Audiences in Meta Ads
Use as prospecting, not retargeting
Shopify Audiences is best used for finding new customers who have not heard of your brand. Do not use them with retargeting creatives — use prospecting creative that introduces your brand and product to a new audience.
Exclude existing customers
Exclude your existing customer email list or website Custom Audience from the Shopify Audience campaign. You do not want to spend prospecting budget on people who already know you.
Compare to your current prospecting audiences
Run a split test comparing Shopify Audiences against your standard interest-based or broad targeting prospecting campaign. Measure cost per purchase and first-purchase ROAS over 4 weeks to see which performs better for your store.
Refresh audiences regularly
Shopify Audiences decay over time as purchase intent signals change. Recreate your audiences monthly to keep them updated with fresh signal data.
Privacy and Data Considerations
Shopify Audiences uses aggregated, hashed data and is built to comply with privacy regulations. Individual customer data is never shared between merchants. The system uses privacy-preserving techniques (similar to Meta’s aggregated event measurement) to generate audiences without exposing personally identifiable information.
Merchants must opt in to contribute their data to the Shopify Audiences pool. If you have privacy concerns or operate in a jurisdiction with strict data sharing rules, review Shopify’s documentation on how the data is processed before opting in.
Does It Help If My Tracking Is Broken?
Shopify Audiences generates audiences from purchase data on the Shopify backend — it does not depend on your pixel firing correctly. So in theory, it can work even if your Meta Pixel is not capturing all events.
However, for the Meta campaign using the Shopify Audience to optimise correctly, your Meta Pixel still needs to be firing purchase events accurately. Smart bidding and campaign optimisation depend on the pixel data, even when audience targeting uses Shopify Audiences.
Get Maximum Performance from Shopify Audiences
Shopify Audiences can improve your Meta prospecting performance, but it works best when your underlying tracking is accurate. If your Meta Pixel is losing purchase events, the algorithm cannot optimise your Shopify Audience campaign effectively regardless of how good the audience is.
